How much does wisdom tooth extraction cost in Egypt, and what is recovery like?

Short answer

As of October 2026, public listings in Egypt show a simple wisdom tooth extraction at roughly 950–2,000 EGP and a surgical extraction of an impacted wisdom tooth at roughly 1,000–5,000 EGP, with complex cases costing more. Most people need 1–3 days of rest; swelling peaks around days 2–3 and full recovery takes up to 2 weeks. The exact cost depends on an examination and X-ray.

Most wisdom tooth extractions are routine procedures done under local anaesthetic, and most people are back to normal life within a few days. What decides both the cost and the recovery is how the tooth sits in the bone: a fully erupted wisdom tooth comes out much like any other tooth, while an impacted (buried) one needs minor surgery. An X-ray, and sometimes a 3D scan, tells you which you are dealing with.

Whether a wisdom tooth should be removed at all is a separate question, covered in when should wisdom teeth be removed? This page focuses on cost, the day-by-day recovery, and the risks.

Wisdom tooth removal cost in Egypt (as of October 2026)

The ranges below come from public listings on Egyptian booking platforms (clinics in Cairo, Giza and Alexandria), including both regular and discounted prices. They are a guide, not a quote.

Type of extractionWhat it involvesPublic listings in Egypt
Simple wisdom tooth extractionTooth fully through the gum, removed without cutting boneAbout 950–2,000 EGP
Surgical extraction (impacted / buried wisdom tooth)Small gum flap, some bone removal or tooth sectioning, stitchesAbout 1,000–5,000 EGP
Complex or deeply impacted casesTooth close to the nerve, may need a 3D scan or a surgeon in hospitalHigher; quoted individually

What changes the price?

  • How deeply the tooth is buried and its angle (a horizontal lower wisdom tooth is the most involved).
  • Upper versus lower: upper wisdom teeth are usually simpler.
  • Whether a 3D (CBCT) scan is needed because the roots are close to the nerve.
  • Removing one tooth or several in the same visit.
  • Local anaesthetic in a clinic versus sedation or general anaesthetic in hospital.
  • Who performs it: a general dentist or an oral surgeon for difficult cases.

The exact cost depends on an examination. A consultation in Cairo typically costs about 200–500 EGP, and a clear X-ray is worth the money: it is what prevents surprises on the day.

What happens during surgical wisdom tooth extraction?

  1. The area is numbed with local anaesthetic. You feel pressure, not sharp pain.
  2. For a buried tooth, a small flap of gum is lifted and a little bone may be removed.
  3. The tooth is often divided into pieces so it comes out with less force.
  4. The socket is cleaned and closed with stitches, which may dissolve on their own.
  5. You bite on gauze and go home with written instructions. Most procedures take well under an hour.

Wisdom tooth extraction recovery: day by day

TimeWhat is typicalWhat helps
Day 0 (surgery day)Numbness for a few hours, oozing, starting sorenessGauze pressure, cold packs, rest with head raised, pain relief before numbness fades as advised
Days 1–3Swelling and stiffness at their peak; sometimes bruising on the cheekCold packs on day 1, soft cool food, no smoking, no straws, no vigorous rinsing
Days 4–7Swelling going down, jaw opening betterGentle warm salt-water rinses after meals, soft food, gentle brushing
Around day 7–10Stitches dissolve or are removed; most discomfort goneFollow-up visit if booked; slowly return to normal food
Up to 2 weeksMild tenderness when chewing; full recovery for most peopleKeep the socket clean; the hole closes gradually

Most people can return to desk work the next day after a simple extraction, and after 1–3 days after a surgical one. Bruising and swelling can last 7–10 days in some people. The NHS recovery guide describes the same pattern.

Swelling after wisdom tooth extraction (التورم بعد خلع ضرس العقل)

Swelling is the body's normal healing response, not a sign that something went wrong. It usually increases for the first 48–72 hours and then improves. Cold packs on the cheek (15–20 minutes on, then off) during the first day, sleeping with your head raised and avoiding exercise for a few days help limit it. Swelling that keeps increasing after day 3, especially with fever, needs a check.

Bleeding

Light oozing is normal on the first day. Bite on folded gauze for 30 minutes without checking. The full step-by-step method is in bleeding after tooth extraction.

Pain relief

Your dentist will advise which painkillers suit you. Follow their instructions or the pack label exactly, and ask a pharmacist if you take other medicines, are pregnant, or have stomach, kidney or heart problems. Children under 16 should not take aspirin. If you were prescribed antibiotics, take the full course as directed; they are not needed for every extraction.

Risks of wisdom tooth removal

  • Dry socket: worsening pain from around day 3–5 when the clot is lost. More common after lower wisdom teeth and in smokers. Treated by cleaning and dressing the socket.
  • Infection: increasing swelling, pus, bad taste or fever after the first few days.
  • Nerve injury: tingling or numbness of the lower lip, chin or tongue. This is uncommon and usually temporary, improving over weeks or months, but rarely it does not fully recover. The risk is higher when the roots are very close to the nerve, which a 3D scan helps assess before surgery.
  • Limited mouth opening (stiff jaw) for some days.
  • Upper wisdom teeth: occasionally a small opening into the sinus, which usually heals with simple care.

When to call your dentist after wisdom tooth surgery

  • Bleeding that does not stop with firm pressure.
  • Pain or swelling that gets worse after day 3, or pain not helped by painkillers.
  • A temperature of 38°C or more, pus, or feeling unwell.
  • Numbness that has not returned by the next day.

How we approach wisdom tooth extraction at El Nabi

Many patients put off wisdom tooth surgery because of stories from friends. At El Nabi Dental Clinic, Prof. Nouran examines you personally and reviews the X-ray with you, so you know whether your tooth is a simple or a surgical extraction, what recovery to expect, and the cost before anything starts. If the tooth sits very close to the nerve or needs hospital-level care, she will tell you honestly and refer you to an oral surgeon rather than take an unnecessary risk.

You will know what to expect during recovery and how to reach us if you are worried. See our general dentistry page for more, or send your X-ray on WhatsApp and we will tell you what kind of extraction it looks like.
