# What happens at my first visit to El Nabi Dental Clinic?

Short answer

A first visit is a consultation, not a rush into treatment. We take your medical and dental history, listen to your concerns, examine your teeth, gums, bite and any dentures or implants, take X-rays or request a scan only if needed, then explain your options with their pros, cons and alternatives, and give you a written treatment plan.

Walking into a new dental clinic can feel uncertain, especially if you have had a difficult experience before or you are considering a larger treatment such as implants or new dentures. Knowing what will happen helps. This page describes what a typical first specialist consultation at El Nabi Dental Clinic in Maadi involves, how to prepare, and what you will leave with.

Practical details such as appointment times, consultation fees and what to bring for your particular case are confirmed by our team when you book by phone or WhatsApp, so you have accurate, up-to-date information before you arrive.

## Step 1: Your medical and dental history

We start by talking, not drilling. We ask about:

- **Your main concern**: pain, a missing tooth, a loose denture, the look of your smile, or simply a check-up.
- **Your general health**: conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, bleeding disorders, and any pregnancy.
- **Medicines and allergies**, including blood thinners, bisphosphonates for bone health, and allergies to antibiotics, latex or anaesthetic.
- **Your dental history**: previous treatment, problems with dentures or crowns, grinding, and any anxiety about dental care.
- **Your goals and budget**, so the options we discuss are realistic for you.

Your medical history matters because many conditions and medicines affect healing, bleeding and the choice of treatment, particularly for extractions and implants.

## Step 2: A thorough examination

The clinical examination typically includes:

1. Each tooth, existing fillings, crowns and bridges, looking for decay, cracks and wear.
2. The gums, including measuring gum pockets to check for gum disease.
3. Your bite: how the teeth meet and how the jaw moves, and signs of grinding or jaw joint problems.
4. The soft tissues of the mouth: tongue, cheeks, palate and floor of the mouth.
5. For denture wearers: the fit, stability and condition of the denture and the gums underneath.
6. For missing teeth: the space available, the gum and the shape of the jaw ridge.

With your permission, clinical photographs may be taken. They help you see what we see and help us plan cosmetic or prosthetic work.

## Step 3: X-rays or a scan, only if needed

X-rays are taken when they are needed to make a diagnosis, for example to check for decay between teeth, infection at a root tip or bone levels. If you are being assessed for implants, a 3D scan (CBCT) may be needed to measure bone height and width and locate nerves and sinuses. If you have recent X-rays or scans from another clinic, bring them; they may reduce the need for new images. Tell us if you are or might be pregnant.

## Step 4: Your options explained

This is the most important part of the visit. We explain what we found in plain language, then go through the realistic options for your situation. For each option we cover:

| What we explain | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| What the treatment involves and how many visits | So you can plan time off work or travel |
| Benefits and expected results | So expectations are realistic |
| Risks and possible complications | Informed consent requires knowing the downsides |
| Who it may not suit | Health, bone or bite factors can rule options in or out |
| Alternatives, including doing nothing for now | So you can compare fairly |
| Expected maintenance and lifespan | No dental treatment lasts forever |
| Estimated cost | Given after examination, so it reflects your actual needs |

For example, if you are missing several teeth, we may compare implants, a bridge and a denture. If you wear a loose lower denture, we may discuss an implant-retained overdenture, an area in which [Prof. Nouran Abdel Nabi](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/dr-nouran-abdel-nabi/) has published research.

## Step 5: A written treatment plan

You leave with a written plan setting out the recommended treatment, the sequence of steps, and the estimated cost. Urgent problems such as pain or infection come first, then foundations such as gum health and fillings, and finally restorative or cosmetic work. There is no pressure to decide on the day. Many patients take the plan home, discuss it with family, and come back with questions; that is welcome.

## Will I have treatment on the first visit?

Sometimes. If you are in pain, the priority is to relieve it, and simple urgent treatment may be started the same day if it is safe and you agree. For planned treatment, particularly implants, crowns, veneers or new dentures, the first visit is usually for assessment and planning, with treatment starting at a later appointment. Whether a cleaning can be done the same day depends on the time available; the team will tell you when you book.

## How to prepare

- Bring a list of your medicines and any recent medical reports relevant to your health.
- Bring previous dental X-rays, scans or treatment records if you have them.
- If you wear a denture, wear it to the appointment and bring any older ones you have.
- Write down your questions in advance; it is easy to forget them in the chair.
- Eat normally beforehand unless you have been told otherwise.
- If you feel anxious, tell us when you book. We can allow extra time and go at your pace.

## Questions you might want to ask

- What is causing my problem, and what happens if I leave it?
- What are all my options, including the simplest one?
- Who is this treatment not suitable for, and does that apply to me?
- How long should the result last, and what maintenance will it need?
- What is included in the estimate, and what could change it?

## If you feel nervous about dental care

Dental anxiety is very common and nothing to be embarrassed about. Tell us what worries you most, whether it is the sound of instruments, injections or a painful past experience. At the first visit we will not start any procedure without explaining it and getting your agreement, and we can agree a hand signal so you can ask us to stop at any time. A family member is welcome to join you for the explanation.
