FAQ · Dentures and overdentures

Can you buy ready-made dentures at a pharmacy?

Short answer

No. A denture that you can safely eat and speak with has to be made from impressions of your own mouth, by a dentist and a dental lab. Pharmacies sell denture adhesives and cleaners, not dentures. Online "moldable" or one-size kits are cosmetic at most and can cause sores, infection and bite problems. If you need teeth quickly, an immediate (temporary) denture is the safe option.

It is a very understandable question. You have lost teeth, a proper denture sounds expensive and slow, and you wonder whether there is something ready-made you could simply buy and wear. Unfortunately, there is no ready-made denture that fits safely. Every mouth has a different shape of gums, palate, bone and remaining teeth, and a denture only stays in place and spreads the chewing pressure properly when it is shaped to that exact mouth.

The good news is that there are legitimate quick options, and a custom denture is usually more affordable than people expect.

Is there a ready-made denture (طقم أسنان جاهز)?

Not one that is safe to wear for eating and daily life. What exists:

  • At the pharmacy: denture adhesives, cleaning tablets, denture brushes and sometimes soft relining kits. These are for looking after a denture you already have, not a replacement for one.
  • Online "moldable" or "DIY" false teeth: one-size sets that you soften in hot water and press over your gums or teeth. They are sold as cosmetic covers and are not designed for chewing.
  • Ready-made teeth used by dental labs: this may be where the idea comes from. Labs do use prefabricated artificial teeth, but they are arranged one by one on a base made from your impressions, to match your bite and face.

So a "plastic denture" (طقم بلاستيك) is simply an acrylic denture. It is still made for you, over several visits.

Why can't you buy dentures over the counter?

A complete denture has no teeth to hold onto. It stays in place through a thin film of saliva, a seal around its edges and the way your upper and lower teeth meet. If the base does not match your gums closely, or the bite is even slightly off, the denture tips, rubs and slips. A partial denture also rests on your remaining teeth, and a badly fitting one can loosen them.

There is also the examination itself. Before a denture is made, a dentist checks for retained roots, infection, sharp bone, gum disease and any sore or patch that needs a closer look. A shop-bought kit skips all of that.

What are the risks of DIY or boil-and-bite dentures?

  • Sore spots and ulcers where the edges press on the gums.
  • Thrush under the denture (denture stomatitis): a yeast infection that is already common among denture wearers. Cleveland Clinic cites research suggesting it affects up to 67% of them, and poor fit and hygiene make it more likely.
  • Extra folds of gum tissue that grow where a loose edge keeps rubbing, sometimes needing minor surgery to remove.
  • Bite and jaw problems from teeth that meet at the wrong height.
  • Damage to remaining teeth if a kit is pressed over them and traps food and plaque.
  • Choking or swallowing risk if a loose piece comes away while eating or sleeping.
  • Unknown materials that have not been checked for long-term contact with the mouth.

Cosmetic snap-on covers raise similar concerns; we discuss them in removable snap-on smile.

What is the quick but safe option?

Immediate (temporary) dentures

If teeth need to be removed, an immediate denture can be made in advance from impressions taken before the extractions and fitted on the same day, so you do not leave without teeth. Because the gums and bone shrink as they heal, immediate dentures usually need adjusting, relining or replacing within the following months; the NHS notes this can be up to a year later.

A temporary partial denture

For one or a few front teeth, a simple acrylic partial denture can fill the gap while you decide on a bridge or implant.

Relining or repairing the denture you have

If your old denture has become loose or cracked, a reline or repair is often faster and cheaper than a new one. See what to do about a loose denture.

How long does it take to make a custom denture?

For a conventional denture, plan on several visits over a few weeks. A typical sequence is:

  1. Examination and first impressions.
  2. Accurate final impressions with a tray made for your mouth.
  3. Recording how your jaws meet and choosing the teeth shade and shape.
  4. Try-in of the teeth in wax, so you can see and approve the look before it is finished.
  5. Delivery, followed by one or more short adjustment visits.

The first weeks need some patience; our guide to getting used to new dentures explains what is normal.

Is a custom denture affordable?

As of October 2026, public listings in Cairo put a conventional acrylic denture at roughly 5,000–20,000 EGP per jaw (most listings 5,000–15,000), with flexible partial dentures from around 3,000 EGP. The exact cost depends on an examination. See denture cost in Egypt for a full breakdown by type.

When to see a dentist instead of waiting

  • A sore or ulcer under a denture that has not healed within two weeks.
  • Swelling, pus or a bad taste around remaining teeth or roots.
  • A denture that has broken and has sharp edges.
  • Pain when chewing that is getting worse.

How Prof. Nouran keeps it simple

At El Nabi Dental Clinic in Maadi, Prof. Nouran, a Professor of Prosthodontics at Cairo University, examines you personally and suggests the simplest safe route: a reline of your current denture, an immediate denture if extractions are needed, or a new denture planned around your budget. You get a written plan and estimate before anything is made.
