FAQ · Dental implants

Can I get dental implants and teeth on the same day?

Short answer

In suitable cases, yes. An implant can sometimes be placed on the same day a tooth is removed, and a temporary tooth or full-arch bridge attached within hours or days. This needs healthy bone, no active infection and good initial implant stability. The final teeth are made after a few months of healing.

In suitable cases, yes. Two related ideas are often grouped together as "same-day implants". The first is an immediate implant: placing the implant in the socket on the same day a tooth is extracted. The second is immediate loading: attaching a temporary tooth or bridge to the implant within hours or a few days, instead of waiting months. Both can work well, but only when specific conditions are met, and the teeth you leave with on day one are temporary. The final teeth are made after the implants have healed into the bone, usually after about three to six months.

Same-day treatment is attractive, especially for front teeth or for people facing the loss of all their teeth. Below is an honest look at when it is a good option, when waiting is wiser, and what the process involves.

Immediate implants, immediate teeth and conventional implants compared

ApproachWhat happensTypical time to final teethMain consideration
Conventional (delayed)Extraction, socket heals 2–4 months, then implant, then 2–4 more monthsAbout 4–8 monthsMost predictable; more visits and a longer gap
Immediate implant, delayed teethImplant placed at extraction, temporary non-implant tooth meanwhileAbout 3–6 monthsSaves a surgery; needs a clean socket and good bone
Immediate implant and immediate temporary toothImplant and temporary crown on the same day or within daysAbout 3–6 monthsNeeds high implant stability and a careful bite
Full-arch immediate loadingSeveral implants and a fixed temporary bridge within about 24–72 hoursAbout 3–6 monthsImplants are splinted together; soft diet essential

Who is a good candidate for same-day implants?

Immediate placement and loading depend less on preference and more on what the bone and gums allow. Typical requirements include:

  • No active infection or large abscess at the extraction site, or one that can be fully cleaned.
  • Enough bone around and beyond the socket to anchor the implant firmly.
  • Good primary stability, meaning the implant is very firm the moment it is placed. This is measured during surgery and is the deciding factor for attaching a tooth on the same day.
  • Intact or repairable socket walls, especially the thin outer wall in the front of the mouth.
  • Healthy general condition, not smoking heavily, and controlled diabetes if present.
  • A bite that can be managed, so the temporary tooth can be kept out of heavy contact.

Because primary stability is only confirmed during surgery, a responsible plan always includes a fallback: if the implant is not firm enough on the day, it is left to heal under the gum and the temporary tooth is added later.

Benefits of same-day implants

  • Fewer surgical procedures, since extraction and placement are combined.
  • Shorter overall treatment time.
  • No period without a tooth in the smile zone.
  • For full arches, moving from failing teeth or a loose denture to fixed temporary teeth within days.
  • In some front-tooth cases, help in supporting the gum shape around the new tooth.

Risks and trade-offs

Immediate approaches are well researched and can achieve results comparable to conventional implants in carefully selected patients. However, they are less forgiving. Risks include:

  • Gum recession on front teeth if the outer bone wall is thin, which can expose a grey line or make the tooth look longer.
  • Higher risk of failure if overloaded: biting hard on a new temporary tooth can disturb healing.
  • Infection if the socket was not fully clean.
  • More complex surgery, often requiring grafting into the gap between implant and socket.

For many patients, especially with back teeth, infected sockets or thin bone, a staged approach is the safer and more predictable choice. Waiting a few months is not a step backwards if it leads to a better long-term result.

Same-day teeth for a full arch

For people who are losing all their teeth in one jaw or struggling with a loose denture, full-arch immediate loading can be life-changing. Four to six implants are placed, often with the back ones angled to make use of available bone, and a fixed temporary bridge is attached within about one to three days. The implants are connected together by the bridge, which spreads the forces and helps them heal. You can compare designs in All-on-4 vs All-on-6, and see our full-mouth implants page for how this treatment works.

The temporary bridge is usually acrylic. A soft diet is essential for the first weeks, and after healing the final bridge is made from stronger materials.

Who should not choose same-day implants?

  • People with active, uncontrolled gum disease or a significant infection at the site.
  • Heavy smokers or those with uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Patients with severe grinding who cannot protect the temporary teeth.
  • Cases where the bone is too thin or soft to achieve firm stability.
  • Anyone who cannot follow a strict soft diet during healing.

What to expect at El Nabi

At our clinic in Maadi, Prof. Nouran Abdel Nabi assesses each case with an examination and a 3D scan before recommending an immediate approach. We explain in advance what will happen if stability is good on the day, and what the plan is if it is not, so there are no surprises.

If same-day treatment is appropriate, the temporary teeth are designed for appearance and comfort while protecting the healing implants. If it is not, we explain why and offer a staged plan, often with a temporary tooth or denture so you are not left with a gap. Read more about suitability in am I a candidate for dental implants?

Aftercare for immediate implants

  • Follow a soft diet for the period your dentist advises, often six to eight weeks.
  • Do not bite into hard or sticky foods with the temporary teeth.
  • Keep the area clean as instructed, with gentle brushing and prescribed rinses.
  • Avoid smoking completely during healing.
  • Attend all review visits so the bite can be checked.

When to see a dentist
