# How often should I see a dentist for a check-up and cleaning?

Short answer

Many adults do well with a dental check-up and cleaning every 6 to 12 months, but the right interval depends on your individual risk. People with gum disease, frequent decay, diabetes, implants, dentures or braces may need visits every 3 to 6 months, while low-risk adults may safely go up to 12 months or longer between check-ups.

"Every six months" is the most familiar rule in dentistry, but it was never based on strong evidence for everyone. Modern guidance recommends that the interval between check-ups is set for each person according to their risk of tooth decay, gum disease and other problems. For some people six months is right; for others it is too often, or not often enough.

## What the guidance says

The UK's National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommends that adults be seen at intervals of between 3 and 24 months, and children between 3 and 12 months, depending on their oral health and risk factors ([NICE CG19: dental recall](https://www.nice.org.uk/guidance/cg19)). In practice, many adults in Cairo do well with a visit every 6 to 12 months, and we tailor that after your first examination.

## Who may need more frequent visits

| Situation | Typical interval | Why |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Gum disease (periodontitis), current or treated | Every 3–4 months | Bacteria below the gum line recolonise within months; regular deep cleaning helps keep it stable |
| Frequent new cavities | Every 3–6 months | Early detection, fluoride treatment and diet advice |
| Diabetes | Every 3–6 months | Higher risk of gum disease; gum health and blood sugar affect each other |
| Smokers | Every 3–6 months | Higher risk of gum disease and oral lesions; smoking can mask gum bleeding |
| Dental implants or implant overdentures | Every 3–6 months initially, then as advised | Implants can develop gum and bone inflammation (peri-implantitis) |
| Dentures | At least yearly | Fit changes as the gums and bone shrink; mouth tissues need checking |
| Braces or aligners | Every 3–6 months for cleaning | Plaque collects around brackets |
| Pregnancy | At least one check during pregnancy | Hormonal changes increase gum inflammation |
| Low-risk adult with healthy gums and no recent decay | Every 12 months, sometimes longer | Low chance of new problems between visits |

## Why regular visits matter even when nothing hurts

Most dental problems are silent in their early stages. Early decay between teeth, gum disease, cracks, worn fillings and changes around implants often cause no pain until they are advanced. By the time a tooth hurts, the treatment needed is usually bigger: a small filling may have become a root canal, or a mild gum problem may have led to bone loss.

Regular check-ups also include screening the soft tissues of the mouth, tongue and throat for unusual patches or ulcers, which is particularly important for smokers.

## What happens at a routine check-up

1. **Update of your medical history and medicines**, because many conditions and drugs affect the mouth.
2. **Examination of teeth, fillings, crowns and gums**, including measuring gum pockets where needed.
3. **Check of the soft tissues**: tongue, cheeks, palate and floor of the mouth.
4. **X-rays when indicated**, not automatically at every visit; frequency depends on your risk.
5. **Scaling and polishing** (تنظيف الجير) to remove tartar that a toothbrush cannot.
6. **Personal advice** on brushing, cleaning between teeth, diet and your next visit date.

## How often should teeth be cleaned professionally?

Tartar (calculus) forms at different speeds in different people. Some build it up quickly, especially behind the lower front teeth, and benefit from cleaning every 6 months or more often. Others build very little. Scaling is not harmful to enamel when done properly, and mild sensitivity afterwards usually settles quickly. If your gums bleed when you brush, that is a sign of inflammation, not a reason to brush less.

## Are routine dental X-rays safe?

Dental X-rays use a very low dose of radiation, and digital sensors reduce it further. They are taken when the information they give is likely to change your care, for example to find decay between teeth or check bone levels, rather than on a fixed schedule for everyone. Low-risk adults may only need bitewing X-rays every couple of years. If you are or might be pregnant, tell us before any X-ray; urgent images can still be taken safely with protection when needed, but routine ones are usually postponed.

## Children's check-ups

Children should usually see a dentist when the first teeth appear or by their first birthday, then regularly as advised, often every 6 months. Children's teeth can decay quickly, and early visits help them get used to the dental chair in a calm way.

## Check-ups after major treatment

If you have had implants, crowns, veneers or a new denture, follow-up visits are part of the treatment, not an optional extra. Implants in particular need regular professional maintenance to stay healthy; see [how long do dental implants last?](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/how-long-do-dental-implants-last/) Prosthodontic work led by [Prof. Nouran Abdel Nabi](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/dr-nouran-abdel-nabi/) includes planned reviews to check the bite, the gums and the fit over time.

## What you can do between visits

- Brush twice a day for about two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste; spit, do not rinse heavily afterwards.
- Clean between the teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes.
- Limit how often you have sugary snacks and drinks; frequency matters more than amount.
- Avoid smoking and limit acidic drinks.
- If you wear dentures, clean them daily and take them out at night unless advised otherwise.

## Check-ups at El Nabi Dental Clinic

At our clinic in Maadi, your first visit includes a full examination and a personal assessment of your risk, so we can recommend an interval that suits you rather than a one-size-fits-all rule. Find out what that first appointment involves in [what to expect at your first visit](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/what-to-expect-at-your-first-visit/), and see our [general dentistry](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/services/general-dentistry/) services for check-ups, cleaning and fillings.

## When to see a dentist sooner

Do not wait for your routine appointment if you have toothache, bleeding or swollen gums that do not settle, a broken tooth or filling, a loose adult tooth or implant, a mouth ulcer lasting more than two weeks, or a denture that rubs or no longer fits. You can message us on WhatsApp to book a check-up.
