# How long do dentures last?

Short answer

A well-made complete denture typically lasts about 7–10 years, but it usually needs a reline every one to two years because the gums and jawbone keep shrinking after teeth are lost. Partial dentures vary with their material and the health of the remaining teeth. Looseness, sore spots, worn teeth or needing more adhesive are signs it needs checking.

Most dentures do not suddenly "expire". What usually happens is slower: the denture stays the same while your mouth changes underneath it. Over the years it becomes a little looser, food gets under it more often, the teeth wear flatter, and you start reaching for more adhesive. Knowing what is normal helps you fix small problems early, before they become sore spots or a remake.

As a general guide, [Cleveland Clinic](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/10900-dentures) gives an average lifespan of seven to ten years for a denture, with a reline every one to two years.

## How long do dentures last by type?

| Type | Typical lifespan | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Complete (full) acrylic denture | About 7–10 years | Usually needs relines along the way |
| Immediate (temporary) denture | Months, up to about a year | Fitted on the day of extractions; adjusted, relined or replaced as the gums heal |
| Acrylic partial denture | Often a few years | Frequently used as an interim option; easy to add a tooth to |
| Cobalt-chrome partial denture | Often many years | Depends heavily on the health of the teeth it rests on |
| Flexible partial denture | Varies | Harder to reline, adjust or add teeth to than acrylic |
| Implant-retained overdenture | Denture part similar to a conventional one | Attachment parts wear and are replaced periodically |

### How long do partial dentures last?

Research on partial dentures shows wide variation, because their lifespan depends as much on the remaining teeth and gums as on the denture itself. If a tooth that holds a clasp decays, or the gum around it becomes inflamed, the denture may need adjusting or a tooth added long before it wears out. Cleaning carefully around the clasps is part of making a partial denture last.

## Why do dentures become loose over time?

After teeth are removed, the bone that held them is no longer needed and gradually shrinks. This is fastest in the first months after extraction and continues more slowly for life. The lower jaw usually shrinks faster than the upper; in one study of complete denture wearers, resorption over a year was about 2.5 times greater in the lower jaw. That is why lower dentures are so often the ones that move.

The denture, made of rigid acrylic, does not change shape with you. The gap that forms underneath lets it rock and rub, and the edges can start pressing in the wrong places. Wearing a loose denture for a long time can also irritate the gums and add to the shrinkage.

## What is denture relining, and how is it different from a new denture?

### Reline

A new layer of material is added to the fitting surface so it matches your gums again. The teeth and bite stay the same. It is usually the first step for a denture that is otherwise in good condition.

### Rebase

Most or all of the pink base is replaced while keeping the existing teeth. It is used when the base is old or stained but the teeth are still fine.

### New denture

Needed when the teeth are worn flat, the bite has collapsed, the base is cracked or repaired many times, or the shape no longer supports your lips and cheeks. Our guide to [denture cost in Egypt](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/denture-cost-egypt/) explains what a replacement typically costs.

## When should I replace my denture? Signs it is time

- The denture slips when you talk, laugh or eat, or food keeps getting underneath.
- You need more and more adhesive to get through the day; see [is denture adhesive safe](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/denture-adhesive-safe/).
- Sore spots or ulcers keep coming back.
- The teeth look short or flat, and chewing takes more effort.
- Your chin seems closer to your nose, your lips look thinner, or the corners of your mouth crack.
- Clicking, cracks, repairs that keep failing, or stains and smells that do not clean off.

If your denture is loose right now, our page on [what to do about a loose denture](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/loose-denture-what-to-do/) covers the immediate steps.

## How to make your dentures last longer

1. Clean them every morning and night with a soft brush and a non-abrasive cleaner; the [NHS](https://www.nhs.uk/tests-and-treatments/dentures/) advises against ordinary toothpaste, which can scratch them.
2. Take them out at night unless your dentist advises otherwise, and keep them in water or a cleaning solution so they do not dry out and warp.
3. Never use hot or boiling water, and do not soak them in bleach for long.
4. Clean over a folded towel or a basin of water, so a drop does not crack them.
5. Do not adjust, file or glue them yourself.
6. Have a check-up once a year even if nothing hurts, so fit, bite and gums can be checked.

### When to see a dentist sooner

Do not wait for your yearly visit if you have a sore or ulcer that has not healed in two weeks, a white or red patch under the denture, swelling, or pain that is getting worse. These are usually simple to deal with, but any persistent sore in the mouth should be examined.

## Will implants make my denture last longer?

Implants do not make the acrylic itself wear less, but they change how the denture is held. The denture clips onto the implants instead of relying only on the gums, so it is far more stable, and the bone around the implants tends to be preserved better. For people whose lower denture keeps getting loose, an [implant-retained overdenture](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/what-is-an-implant-retained-overdenture/) is often worth discussing.

## How Prof. Nouran looks after your denture

Prof. Nouran is a Professor of Prosthodontics at Cairo University, the specialty that designs and maintains dentures, and she has published research on implant-retained overdentures. At El Nabi Dental Clinic in Maadi she examines your current denture and your gums personally and tells you honestly whether a reline is enough, or whether a new denture or implants would serve you better. You leave with a written plan and estimate, and no pressure to replace something that can be fixed.

If you are not sure whether your denture can be saved, send a photo of it on WhatsApp, or read more on our [dentures service](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/services/dentures/) page.
