# Are denture adhesives safe?

Short answer

Yes, denture adhesive is generally safe when used as directed on a denture that fits well: a few small dabs, removed completely every day. Problems have been linked to heavy, long-term use of zinc-containing creams, so a zinc-free product is a sensible choice. If you need more and more adhesive, the denture usually needs a reline or replacement.

Denture adhesive can make a real difference to confidence: less movement when you talk, less food getting under the denture, and less worry about it slipping in company. Used properly, it is a helpful extra. The problems start when adhesive is used to hold in a denture that no longer fits, because then people tend to use far more of it, every day, for years.

Here is how to use it safely, what the zinc concern is really about, and when the adhesive is telling you something about your denture.

## Is denture adhesive harmful?

For most people, no. Evidence-based guidelines from the American College of Prosthodontists ([Felton et al., 2011](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/21324026/)) found that adhesives can improve the retention and stability of well-made dentures and help keep food out, and that patients report better comfort and quality of life with them. The same guidelines advise using only a small amount, removing it completely every day, and having the denture and gums checked regularly if you use adhesive long term.

### The zinc concern

Some denture creams have contained zinc. Swallowing large amounts of zinc over a long time can reduce the body's copper levels, and cases of numbness, tingling and nerve damage have been reported in people who used very large quantities. According to the [U.S. FDA](https://www.fda.gov/medical-devices/dental-devices/denture-adhesives), those reports involved people using at least two tubes of zinc-containing adhesive a week, and the FDA has not found conclusive evidence of harm when the products are used as labelled. As a precaution, the guidelines recommend avoiding zinc-containing adhesives, and zinc-free products are widely available. Check the ingredients on the pack.

If you have been using a lot of adhesive and notice numbness or tingling in your hands or feet, or problems with balance, stop using it and see your physician.

## How much denture adhesive should I use?

Less than most people think. Guidelines suggest about three or four pea-sized dabs per denture. If adhesive oozes out at the edges or into your mouth, you are using too much. The FDA gives a practical check: a standard 2.4-ounce (about 68 g) tube used for both upper and lower dentures should last around seven to eight weeks. Note the date when you open a tube; if it runs out much faster, it is time to have your denture checked.

## How to use denture adhesive correctly

1. Clean and dry the denture. Adhesive holds more reliably on a clean surface.
2. **Cream:** apply three or four small dabs on the fitting surface, away from the edges. **Powder:** sprinkle a thin, even layer and shake off the excess. **Strips:** cut to shape and place as directed.
3. Rinse your mouth, then press the denture firmly into place and hold it for a few seconds.
4. Do not add a new layer on top of old adhesive during the day.
5. At night, remove the denture, rinse with warm (not hot) water and brush off every trace of adhesive.
6. Gently clean your gums and palate with a soft brush or a damp cloth to remove any residue.

Some people find powder easier to clean off and creams give a stronger hold; strips can suit people with a dry mouth. Any type is fine if used sparingly and removed completely.

## When is adhesive a sign of a problem?

A well-fitting denture should feel reasonably stable without adhesive; the adhesive simply adds security. Your gums and jawbone shrink gradually after teeth are lost, so a denture that fitted well five years ago may now rely on adhesive to stay in. Signs that adhesive is covering a fit problem:

- You need more adhesive than before, or have to reapply during the day.
- The denture still moves even with adhesive.
- Sore spots, ulcers or redness under the denture.
- Food packs under the denture within minutes.

In these cases, the answer is usually a reline or a new denture, not more adhesive. See [what to do about a loose denture](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/loose-denture-what-to-do/) and [how long do dentures last](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/how-long-do-dentures-last/).

## Who should be careful with denture adhesive?

- People with a new or immediate denture, where sore spots should be adjusted by the dentist rather than covered with adhesive.
- Anyone with a known allergy to an ingredient, or a burning feeling after using a particular product.
- Anyone with an unhealed sore, ulcer or a white or red patch in the mouth; this needs examining first.
- People using a broken or cracked denture, which should be repaired rather than held together with adhesive.
- Anyone who sleeps in their dentures with adhesive in place; most people should take dentures out at night to rest the gums. Our guide to [getting used to new dentures](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/getting-used-to-new-dentures/) covers daily routines.

## Is there a way to stop needing adhesive?

For many people with a loose lower denture, yes. An implant-retained overdenture clips onto two or more implants, so it stays in place when you eat and talk, and usually needs no adhesive at all. It is a bigger step than a reline, with a higher cost and some maintenance of the attachments, but for many patients it changes daily life.
