# What are the stages of dental implant treatment and how many visits does it take?

Short answer

A straightforward single implant usually takes about 4–6 visits over roughly 3–6 months: consultation and X-rays or a 3D scan, implant surgery, a stitch check, then a scan or impressions and fitting of the final crown once the bone has bonded. Cases that need a bone graft or sinus lift often take 6–12 months, while suitable immediate-implant cases can leave with a temporary tooth on the day.

For a single implant placed in healthy, healed bone, most patients need about **4 to 6 visits spread over roughly 3 to 6 months**. The surgery itself is usually one appointment. Most of the time in between is simply waiting while the bone grows onto the implant, a process called osseointegration, and you live normally during that period.

The timeline changes a lot depending on whether the tooth still needs to be removed, whether you need extra bone, and how many teeth are being replaced. Below is what happens at each stage, a timeline table for the common situations, and what can make treatment faster or slower.

## What are the stages of dental implant treatment?

1. **Consultation and planning.** Examination of your teeth, gums and bite, a panoramic X-ray, and often a 3D scan (CBCT) to measure the bone and locate the nerve and sinus. You leave with a plan, alternatives and an estimate.
2. **Preparing the mouth.** Any gum disease, decay or infection is treated first. If a tooth needs removing, it is extracted, sometimes with the implant placed at the same visit.
3. **Bone graft or sinus lift, if needed.** When there is not enough bone, it is rebuilt either during implant surgery or as a separate step that heals first.
4. **Implant placement.** Under local anaesthetic, the implant is placed in the bone. A single implant typically takes about 30–60 minutes.
5. **Stitch check.** A short visit around 7–14 days later to check healing and remove stitches if needed.
6. **Healing (osseointegration).** Usually about 3 to 6 months, depending on the bone and the case. A temporary tooth can be worn if the gap is visible.
7. **Uncovering and impressions.** If the implant was covered by gum, it is uncovered and a healing cap is placed. Then a digital scan or impressions are taken for the final tooth.
8. **Fitting the final crown.** The connector (abutment) and crown are fitted and the bite is adjusted. Some cases need a try-in visit first.
9. **Maintenance.** Regular check-ups and professional cleaning, typically every 6 months.

## How many sessions does a dental implant need? Timeline by case

| Situation | Typical visits | Typical total time |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Single implant in healed bone | 4–6 | About 3–6 months |
| Tooth extracted first, implant later | 5–7 | About 5–9 months (socket heals for roughly 2–3 months first) |
| Immediate implant at the extraction visit | 4–6 | About 3–6 months; a temporary tooth may be fitted on the day in suitable cases |
| Bone graft or sinus lift healed before the implant | 6–8 | About 6–12 months |
| Full arch on 4–6 implants (all-on-4 style) | 6–10 | Fixed temporary teeth often within days in suitable cases; final teeth after about 3–6 months |

These are typical ranges, not promises. Your own timeline is set after the examination and scan.

## How long does dental implant treatment take?

### How long is the gap between the implant and the crown?

Usually about 3 to 6 months. Traditionally, the lower jaw, where the bone is denser, healed in around 3 months, and the upper jaw, where the bone is softer, in up to 6 months. Modern implant surfaces often allow shorter waits when the implant is very stable at placement, but the decision is based on the stability of your implant, not on the calendar. Loading an implant too early is one of the avoidable causes of failure. The Cleveland Clinic describes bone fusion as taking about three to nine months depending on how quickly a person heals ([Cleveland Clinic: dental implants](https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/treatments/10903-dental-implants)).

### How long does the implant surgery itself take?

A single implant typically takes 30 to 60 minutes in the chair, including numbing. Several implants or a full arch take longer, sometimes a few hours. Most people go back to normal activities the next day or the day after. For what you will feel, see [do dental implants hurt?](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/do-dental-implants-hurt/)

## Can a dental implant be done in one day?

Sometimes, but not for everyone. In an immediate implant, the tooth is removed and the implant placed in the same visit, and when the implant is very stable a temporary tooth can be fitted the same day. The temporary is shaped to avoid heavy biting, and the final crown still comes after healing. Immediate implants need healthy surrounding bone and no active infection. Our page on [immediate implants and same-day teeth](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/immediate-implants-same-day-teeth/) explains who is suitable.

## What can make dental implant treatment take longer?

- **Not enough bone:** a graft or sinus lift may need 3 to 6 months or more to heal before the implant. See [bone graft and sinus lift](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/bone-graft-and-sinus-lift/).
- **Infection or gum disease** that must be treated first.
- **Smoking or uncontrolled diabetes,** which slow healing.
- **Low stability at placement,** which calls for a longer wait before loading.
- **Front teeth,** where extra steps may be used to shape the gum for a natural look.
- **Missed appointments** or travelling during the healing phase.

### When rushing is not a good idea

Many patients understandably want everything done quickly, especially before an event or a trip. But some situations call for patience: an infected tooth, thin bone, heavy smoking, uncontrolled diabetes, or a strong bite with teeth grinding. In these cases, a staged approach usually gives a safer and more lasting result. A good plan tells you honestly which steps can be combined and which should not be.

## What to expect between visits

- Soreness and swelling for a few days after surgery, managed with cold packs and prescribed pain relief.
- Soft food on the implant side for the first weeks, and no hard biting on a temporary tooth.
- Gentle but thorough cleaning around the area as instructed.
- A quick call to the clinic if pain or swelling gets worse after the third day, or if anything feels loose.

## How Prof. Nouran plans your visits

Crossing Cairo for appointment after appointment without knowing how many are left is exhausting. Prof. Nouran, Professor of Prosthodontics and Dental Implants at Cairo University, examines you personally and gives you a written plan that lists each stage, roughly when it happens and what it costs, so there are no surprises. Because she plans from the final tooth backwards, steps are combined where it is safe to do so, and you know in advance whether you will have a temporary tooth while you heal.

The clinic is in Golden Gate Tower on the Autostrad in Maadi, easy to reach from Maadi, Helwan, New Cairo and Nasr City. Read more about our [dental implant treatment](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/services/dental-implants/), or send your X-ray on WhatsApp and we will tell you roughly how many visits your case is likely to need.
