# How to choose a dentist in Maadi: a 10-point checklist

Maadi has dozens of dental clinics within a few streets of each other, and most look similar from the outside. This 10-point checklist helps you compare them on what actually affects your treatment and your safety.

Key takeaways

- Match the dentist to the job: complex implant, denture or cosmetic work benefits from relevant specialist training.
- Verify professional registration and ask direct questions about sterilisation; a good clinic welcomes them.
- Ask for a written treatment plan with itemised costs and alternatives before you agree to anything.
- Read reviews for patterns, not star ratings, and check how the clinic handles problems.
- Practical factors such as language, emergency access and how you will get there matter for long treatments.

If you live or work in Maadi, you are never far from a dental clinic. Along Road 9, around Degla and out towards New Maadi, signs advertise implants, Hollywood smiles and "the latest technology". That choice is good news, but it also makes it hard to know who to trust with something you will live with for years.

The right dentist for a quick filling may not be the right dentist for a full-mouth implant plan. This checklist gives you ten concrete things to check, questions to ask, and red flags to notice. At the end, we apply the same checklist to our own clinic, honestly, including the points you should confirm with us directly.

## 1. General dentist or specialist: match the dentist to the job

A good general dentist handles most everyday care: check-ups, cleaning, fillings, simple extractions and many root canals. For more complex work, extra training in a specific field matters.

- **Prosthodontics**: replacing and restoring teeth, including crowns, bridges, dentures, implant-supported teeth and full-mouth rehabilitation.
- **Endodontics**: complex root canal treatment and re-treatment.
- **Periodontics**: gum disease, gum surgery and the tissues around implants.
- **Orthodontics**: braces and aligners.
- **Oral surgery**: difficult extractions, wisdom teeth, bone grafting.

Ask the dentist what proportion of their work is in the treatment you need, and who in the clinic actually performs each stage. In some clinics, the person you meet at consultation is not the person who places your implant or prepares your veneers.

## 2. Credentials you can verify

In Egypt, dentists must be licensed to practise and registered with their professional syndicate; for dentists this is the Egyptian Dental Syndicate (نقابة أطباء الأسنان). The clinic itself should also hold a Ministry of Health licence. It is reasonable to ask:

- Which university did the dentist graduate from, and what postgraduate qualifications (diploma, master's, doctorate) do they hold, and in what field?
- Do they have a current university or teaching affiliation? Academic dentists often follow current evidence closely.
- Is there published research or continuing education in the area you need?

Certificates on the wall are a start. Better still are details you can check: a university affiliation, a named postgraduate degree, or research you can find on Google Scholar or ResearchGate. Be cautious of vague titles such as "international implant expert" with no named institution.

## 3. Sterilisation and infection control

This is the point patients feel most awkward asking about, and the one that matters most for safety. Professional clinics are used to these questions. Ask:

- How are instruments sterilised? Reusable instruments should be cleaned and then sterilised in an autoclave (a steam steriliser), and kept in sealed pouches until use.
- Are handpieces (drills) sterilised between patients, not only wiped?
- Are single-use items such as needles, saliva ejectors and many burs used once and discarded?
- Are surfaces cleaned and covered between patients? Do staff change gloves for every patient?

You will often see sterilised pouches opened in front of you. A clinic that becomes defensive or vague when asked is a red flag. The WHO and national dental bodies publish infection-control standards, and a well-run clinic should be able to explain its routine in plain language.

## 4. A thorough examination before any quote

A reliable plan starts with a proper examination: your medical history, an assessment of teeth, gums and bite, and appropriate X-rays. For implants this often includes a 3D scan (CBCT) to measure bone. Be wary of a firm price for implants or a full smile makeover given over the phone or from a single photo; a range is fine, a commitment is not. Our page on [what to expect at your first visit](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/what-to-expect-at-your-first-visit/) describes a typical first appointment.

## 5. A written treatment plan with alternatives

For anything beyond a routine filling, ask for the plan in writing. A good written plan includes:

- The diagnosis, in plain words.
- The recommended treatment, the number of visits and approximate timeline.
- At least one alternative, including "no treatment for now" where that is reasonable, with pros and cons.
- The materials or systems to be used (for example zirconia or E.max crowns, the implant system).
- Risks and what happens if something needs adjusting.

Written plans protect both sides and make it easy to get a second opinion.

## 6. Transparent, itemised pricing

Price matters, and in Cairo it varies widely. As of October 2026, public Maadi listings show single implants from roughly 10,000 to 30,000 EGP, with discount offers advertised as low as 5,950–7,800 EGP, and consultations around 200–500 EGP. The exact cost always depends on an examination.

When comparing quotes, check what each includes:

| Question to ask | Why it matters |
| --- | --- |
| Is the crown or abutment included in the implant price? | Some low quotes cover only the screw placed in the bone. |
| Are X-rays or a CBCT scan included? | Scans can add a noticeable amount to the total. |
| Are bone grafts or sinus lifts likely? | These change cost and timeline significantly. |
| Are temporary teeth included? | You may need them for appearance while healing. |
| What are follow-up and adjustment visits charged at? | Long treatments involve several reviews. |
| How is payment staged? | Paying per stage is easier to manage and fairer if plans change. |

For implants specifically, see our guide to [dental implant costs in Cairo](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/faq/how-much-do-dental-implants-cost-in-cairo/).

## 7. Reviews: read for patterns

Google and Facebook reviews are useful, but read them carefully:

- Look for detailed reviews describing a specific treatment, not just "great doctor".
- Notice repeated themes: punctuality, explanation, pain management, follow-up.
- Read the negative reviews and, more importantly, how the clinic replied.
- Be cautious of many five-star reviews posted within a short period with similar wording.
- Ask friends and neighbours in Maadi; word of mouth remains a reasonable signal.

## 8. Communication and language

You should leave every appointment understanding what was done and what comes next. Maadi has a large international community, so if Arabic is not your first language, check that the dentist can explain diagnosis, risks and consent in English (or your preferred language) without relying on a receptionist to translate. Good communication also means a dentist who asks about your priorities, such as budget, appearance or time, rather than offering one standard package.

## 9. Emergency access and aftercare

Pain, swelling or a broken temporary rarely happens at a convenient time. Before starting treatment, ask:

- How do I reach the clinic if I have a problem after hours, for example by WhatsApp?
- How quickly are urgent cases usually seen?
- What is the follow-up schedule after surgery or a big restoration?

Our guide on what to do in a dental emergency covers first aid while you wait to be seen.

## 10. Location, parking and getting there

Implants, dentures and smile makeovers usually take several visits over weeks or months, so convenience is not a trivial factor. In Maadi, consider:

- **Metro Line 1** stops at Sakanat El-Maadi, Maadi and Hadayek El-Maadi stations, which helps patients coming from Downtown, Helwan or across Cairo.
- **Parking** can be difficult on busy streets around Road 9 at peak times. Ask whether there is nearby parking.
- **Traffic** on the Corniche and Ring Road affects travel times; morning or mid-afternoon appointments may be easier.
- **Accessibility**: if stairs are hard for you or a family member, ask whether the building has a lift.

## Before you book: a quick first message

You can test several checklist points before you ever sit in the chair. A short WhatsApp message or call tells you a lot about how a clinic communicates. Try asking:

- Who would examine me, and what is their background in the treatment I am asking about?
- What does the first consultation include, and are X-rays charged separately?
- Will I receive a written plan with costs and alternatives after the examination?
- How do I reach you if I have a problem after treatment?

Clear, unhurried answers are a good sign. A reply that jumps straight to a discount without asking about your situation tells you something too. If you are unsure how often you should be seen once treatment is complete, our answer on how often to see a dentist may help.

## The checklist at a glance

1. Relevant training for the treatment you need
2. Verifiable registration, degrees and affiliations
3. Clear answers on sterilisation
4. Full examination and X-rays before a firm quote
5. Written plan with alternatives and risks
6. Itemised, transparent pricing
7. Reviews that show consistent patterns
8. Explanations you understand, in your language
9. A clear route for emergencies and follow-up
10. A location you can reach reliably for repeat visits

## Red flags worth walking away from

- Pressure to decide or pay on the same day, especially with "today only" discounts.
- Recommending crowns or veneers on many healthy teeth without discussing less invasive options.
- No X-rays before implant or root canal treatment.
- Absolute promises about success rates, zero discomfort or how many decades the work will last. Honest dentists talk about typical outcomes and risks.
- Reluctance to put the plan or prices in writing.

## How El Nabi Dental Clinic measures up

It would be strange to write this checklist and not apply it to ourselves. Here is what we can state, and what you should simply ask us:

- **Training (points 1–2):** Our lead dentist, [Prof. Nouran Mahmoud Abdel Nabi](https://elnabidentalclinic.com/en/dr-nouran-abdel-nabi/), is a Professor of Prosthodontics and Dental Implants at Cairo University. Prosthodontics is the field focused on replacing and restoring teeth. Her published research on implant-retained overdentures appears in journals including The International Journal of Prosthodontics, the European Journal of Dentistry and the Egyptian Dental Journal. You can look these up yourself.
- **Scope:** We offer check-ups, cleaning, fillings, root canal treatment, extractions, crowns and bridges, veneers, whitening, dentures and dental implants, including full-mouth and implant-retained overdenture options.
- **Sterilisation, plans and pricing (points 3–6):** Ask us any of the questions above at your visit. Your plan and its cost depend on an examination, and you are welcome to take it away to think it over or get a second opinion.
- **Reviews (point 7):** Judge us the same way you judge anyone: read the patterns.
- **Language and contact (points 8–9):** Our site and information are in Arabic and English, and you can message us on WhatsApp. Ask how urgent problems are handled before you start treatment.
- **Location (point 10):** We are in Maadi. Ask us for directions and parking advice when you book.

We are not the right fit for every patient, and the checklist works just as well for comparing us with other clinics.
