Save the tooth, bridge the gap, or place an implant?
When a back tooth is badly broken or painful, patients are often told straight away that it needs extraction and an implant. Sometimes that is right. Other times, root canal treatment followed by a crown can keep the natural tooth for many years at a lower cost. The decision depends on how much healthy tooth remains, the condition of the root and gum, and your bite.
If the tooth is already gone, the main choices are an implant, a fixed bridge supported by the neighbouring teeth, or a removable partial denture. A bridge needs the adjacent teeth to be prepared; an implant does not, but it requires surgery, healing time and enough bone. Our guide on implants versus bridges versus dentures sets out the trade-offs side by side.
Why a prosthodontist's opinion helps
Prof. Nouran Abdel Nabi is a Professor of Prosthodontics and Dental Implants at Cairo University. Prosthodontists plan from the end result backwards: what the final crown or bridge needs to look like and how it will meet the opposite teeth, then where the support should come from. That perspective is useful when the options are close and the price differences are large.
Getting from Faisal to Maadi
Metro
Faisal station on Line 2 is the simplest starting point for many residents. Ride north to Sadat, change to Line 1 and continue south to the Maadi stations. Off-peak, allow roughly 45–60 minutes door to door, including walking. It avoids the unpredictability of Faisal Street traffic.
Car
Drivers usually work their way south to the Ring Road, often via the El Mariouteya side, and cross the Nile at El Moneeb into the Maadi side. Off-peak this is about 35–50 minutes. At peak times Faisal Street and its feeder roads can add a great deal, so the metro is often the safer bet for a fixed appointment time.
After booking, we send directions and a map pin on WhatsApp.
Grouping visits to keep trips down
A root canal and crown usually take two to three visits; an implant spans several months because the bone needs time to heal around it. For Faisal patients we try to complete the examination, X-rays and treatment discussion in the first visit, and to align later appointments so each one does as much as is safely possible.
Not everything needs the trip. Checkups, cleanings and simple fillings are often more convenient with a dentist near home. Implants are also not suitable for everyone, including people with uncontrolled diabetes or heavy smokers, and we will discuss alternatives if that applies to you.

Common questions
Is the metro from Faisal to Maadi worth it compared with driving?
For a fixed appointment time, often yes. Line 2 from Faisal station to Sadat, then Line 1 south, takes roughly 45–60 minutes door to door off-peak and is not affected by street traffic. Driving via the Ring Road can be faster off-peak but varies widely at rush hour.
A clinic on Faisal Street said my tooth must be extracted. Can you give a second opinion?
Yes. Bring any X-rays you have. We will examine the tooth and explain whether root canal treatment and a crown are realistic, or whether extraction followed by an implant, bridge or partial denture makes more sense. Sometimes extraction is indeed the right answer.
How many visits does an implant take for someone travelling from Faisal?
Typically an assessment, the placement visit, a short check after surgery, and two or more visits for the final crown after healing, which often takes two to four months. We schedule so that each journey covers as much as is clinically safe.
